Nature-based Regeneration through Water: Integrating the water cycle in urban renaturalization

Objectives

Overall objectives

NatUR-W seeks to develop, implement, and validate the regeneration of urban areas by incorporating water management and self-sufficient NbS. Rehabilitating existing infrastructures will provide social, economic, and environmental ES that will empower key stakeholders and local communities. To build resilient societies and promote local economic growth and more integrated urban regeneration plans, an enriching, sustainable and inclusive urban model that considers the region’s specific summer/winter water cycle challenges will be developed: NatUR-W Plans. This plan will allow NbS to be replicated in other areas of the city of Lorca and transferred to other cities.

Specific objectives

SO1 – Co-design, implement and validate a NatUR-W Plan (Nature-based Urban regeneration Plan)

  • Define the NatUR-W Plan concept from a holistic point of view, to respond to the challenges and boundaries of the site
  • Co-design a NatUR-W Plan through the integration of NbS and water cycle management, based on the literature, partners’ experience and local stakeholders’ knowledge
  • Deploy Lorca Case Study, optimizing the energy efficiency of four buildings, increasing green areas and integrating the water management
  • Develop a Monitoring Programme to evaluate the implementation impact and operation under the IUCN Global Standard, ensuring their effectiveness and replication in other areas
  • The public houses owned by the municipality will be regenerated and will be used by its beneficiaries.

SO2 – Establish a participatory plan for a sustainable and integrated regeneration urban model

  • Engage the most relevant stakeholders in the design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance processes
  • Develop co-design activities to guide the decision-making of the Case Study
  • Connect relevant stakeholders to support social innovation, mutual learning, and the transfer of key outputs
  • Gather effective knowledge of the co-design, synergies, lessons learned and good practices
  • Develop an NbS Catalogue and Implementation Guidelines to support practitioners, authorities, and policymakers in the NatUR-W plans and NbS replication with an ecological, economic, and social perspective
  • Recreational opportunities will provided by the new infrastructures (Urban Forest and Citizen University)

SO3 – Ensure the replication and transferability of the main outputs and experience of NatUR-W.

  • Development of a Replicability strategy to ensure knowledge transfer of the main outputs and experiences of the project.
  • Development of a Participatory Plan to involve stakeholders in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of NbS
  • Establish a Training Programme to enhance replicability, create potential sources of green jobs, economic growth and an optimal NbS implementation and maintenance
  • Clustering and networking activities with other European projects, initiatives and networks (URBACT and IUC)
  • Report Project information, outputs and data to OPPLA and URBACT repository
