Nature-based Regeneration through Water: Integrating the water cycle in urban renaturalization

The 1st kick-off meeting of NatUR-W project, took place in Lorca, Spain, on June 26th – 27th, 2024, bringing together all five project partners. The project is coordinated by the Lorca City Council in partnership with three Spanish SMEs—SingularGreen, INDRESMAT, and SBN Clima—as well as the UNESCO Center on Integrated and Multidisciplinary Water Resources Management (CIMWRM) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.

During the meeting the Lieutenant Mayor Rosa Medina and María Hernández, from de Local Government, welcomed the participants, emphasizing the project’s significance for Lorca and specifically for the Barrios Altos neighborhood. Leaders of the seven work packages outlined their roles, responsibilities, and work plans, detailing the expected interactions among consortium members. Technical discussions focused on the implementation details of the interventions.

The first Stakeholder Board meeting, which attracted 36 local stakeholders, was held later that day at the Municipality’s premises. The main objective of the session was to identify and map the main actors of the project through two activities. Also, a co-creation workshop with local citizens, including vulnerable groups and children, was held at the “Asociacion de Vecinos Santa Maria” (neighbourhood association). This workshop aimed to engage the community and gather feedback and ideas on the potential use of new green spaces and the renovated prison.

Consortium members had the opportunity to visit the sites for the planned interventions, including the unused land plot with the water deposits, the social housing dwellings, and the old prison, which has been declared a Heritage of Cultural Interest.
